Linux NetworX, SGI Federal and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to
Collaborate on Open Source Projects Using Linux Cluster

LINUXWORLD EXPO BOOTH #1079, SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 28, 2001 ¾ Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory (LLNL) plans to collaborate with high performance
computing vendors Linux NetworX and SGI Federal, a wholly-owned subsidiary
of SGI (NYSE: SGI), to help advance an open source project important to
Linux clustering, the parallel global file system. The three organizations
will use a portion of LLNL's Parallel Computing Environment, a 48 Pentium 4
processor Linux cluster recently ordered by LLNL from Linux NetworX and SGI
Federal, to focus on advancing the project.

This open source collaboration will attempt to extend the state-of-the-art
in scalable parallel cluster file systems by focusing on the demanding
requirements of DOE's Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative's (ASCI)
ongoing computing element. This will require scaling the file-system
performance on a per server and per client basis up to 1,024 clients and
servers; delivered I/O rates of over 32 GB/s; providing server fail-over
and developing a global lock manager.

The group will first collaborate on client and server performance scaling
to develop an open source scalable, parallel global file system for LLNL's
Parallel Capacity Resource clusters. Beginning Oct. 2001, Linux NetworX
and SGI Federal will dedicate resources to this effort, working closely
with LLNL to evaluate various options, and advancing and testing the
project.
