MontaVista To Deliver VisualAge Micro Edition 1.4 For Hard Hat Linux Announcement underscores strong Java Technology partnership with IBM SAN FRANCISCO, September 4, 2001, -‹ MontaVista Software Inc., the company powering the embedded revolution, today announced that it will deliver VisualAge Micro Edition 1.4 (VAME) for Hard Hat Linux® 2.0. The new VisualAge Micro Edition 1.4 from IBM/OTI is a development and deployment solution for building multi-modal Java applications and the embedded devices that run them. The IBM tool-kit offers embedded applications developers all the benefits of Java technology in a high performing, reliable and robust environment. The combination of the J9 Virtual Machine and Hard Hat Linux achieves this goal, providing substantially more in terms of portability, developer productivity and application performance. "This release is a continuation of our strategy to offer best-in-class products to enhance the use of Hard Hat Linux® for embedded applications," said Sheila Baker, vice president, marketing at MontaVista. "This add-on product provides developers with a certified J2ME Java environment as well as expanded platform support." "The two evolving 'open' software standards, embedded Linux and embedded Java, are ideally suited for developing systems for this converging network and Internet environment, " said Paul Zorfass, senior analyst with IDC/FTI. "Working together, IBM and MontaVista continue to deliver industry leading embedded Java solutions to make pervasive computing solutions achievable." The VisualAge Micro Edition dynamic adaptive Just-In-Time ("JIT") features now extend optimized compiled runtime performance to X86 and PowerPC based platforms. Additionally, performance benchmarks for J9 and its runtime components are averaging between 10 and 20 percent faster than similar Version 1.3 configurations. This new VisualAge IDE also includes IBM¹s new "P3ML" XML-based graphics user interface rendering engine, which brings a new degree of flexibility to the design and deployment of embedded user interfaces. "We¹re excited to be working with MontaVista to enable end-to-end pervasive computing technology for embedded Linux developers," said Skip McGaughey, Director of the IBM Embedded Systems Group. "MontaVista¹s release of VisualAge Micro Edition R1.4 for Hard Hat Linux offers embedded Linux engineers the leading "Java Powered" application development and deployment environment." Availability VisualAge Micro Edition 1.3.1 for Hard Hat Linux by MontaVista is available today for use with x86/IA-32, and PowerPC microprocessor architectures. VisualAge Micro Edition 1.4 (VAME) for Hard Hat Linux® 2.0 will be available as an add-on product to subscribers of HHL in the fourth quarter of 2001. It will extend support to StrongARM, MIPS and Hitachi SH-3/SH-4.
