FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SNAPGEAR ANNOUNCES REINFORCED SECURITY TECHNOLOGY FOR BUSINESS PRIVACY AND
PROTECTION
SAN MATEO, Calif. - November 08, 2001 - SnapGear, Inc., a leading provider of
VPN Router appliances, has taken a major step forward to respond to growing
Internet security risks. With security increasingly under the microscope
SnapGear has developed new technology to make the home and enterprise a hard
target for hackers.

VP Marketing, Miles Gillham, said: "In these times people connecting to the
Internet can't afford to take chances with security, all Internet users are
facing a real melt-down situation of viruses, worms, and extremely determined
hacking. That's why, at SnapGear, we're focusing on extending traditional
anti-hacker techniques to the next level by adding a comprehensive and
tightly integrated suite of supporting features.".

"Recent decisions by many insurance firms to decline to cover 'acts of
terrorism' mean that it's even more important to secure your infrastructure
as tightly as possible and make prevention the best cure.", Gillham said.
"You can go a long way to achieve that through firewall protection and VPN
tunnels between offices coupled with active defenses."

These active defenses, which will be available as free firmware updates for
SnapGear customers in December, are intended to reduce the impact of hostile
attempts to breach or interfere with an enterprise communications
infrastructure. Most notable is the facility to detect common forms of
network probing and automatically ban the originator from further activity.
Even if the attacker switches IP addresses, either through using another
launch point or simply spoofing their address, the facility detects and bars
the new probe.

Gillham said: "Most of our customers simply want to know if they're protected
or not. The problem is that many of today's existing intrustion-detection
applications ask the user questions about what to do in a given situation
without qualitatively assessing the threat or giving a clear view of the
appropriate response. With our technology this is handled for you. Extensive
logging, to remote computers if desired, also means that you can wrap up our
system as part of a standardised and scalable enterprise security management
program."

But that's just part of the solution - VPN tunnel capacity in the flagship
SnapGear PRO unit will be increased from 70 to around 100 and Quality of
Service or "traffic shaping" features are also being introduced. Gillham
explained the reasons behind this: "Many of our customers are now setting up
VPN tunnels between other companies in their supply chain so as to extend a
trust framework. It's a bit like in mediaeval times of besiegment or plague
when you would build fortresses with tunnels between them. You get to control
what goes in and out each tunnel to other trusted locations rather than
having to deal with everything through the front door on a case by case
basis. The key thing is that by introducing traffic shaping you have complete
control over the relative bandwidth that you allocate to each network
service."

Specific functionality being released this quarter:

Enhanced stateful firewall
Active intrusion management and logging
Traffic shaping (quality of service)
DNS masquerading
Improved GUI support for VPN and firewall options
Enhanced DHCP server
New Quick Setup Wizard
New Linux setup application
