Subject: [Acl-Devel] Version 0.8.20 released
Date:	 Mon, 11 Mar 2002 00:12:36 +0100 (CET)

Dear all,

since there were no serious problems with the new version, version 0.8 is
now officially released. The most significant changes are:

* The on-disk format has changed again. No further changes are
  planned at this time.

* Official system calls have been reserved in the latest
  development kernels. The ext2/ext3 and XFS file systems are
  not compatible at the system call level.

* The kernel patches have been partially rewritten, and are now
  better structured.

* RPM versions of all packages are now available.

* The aget and aset utilities are replaced by getfattr and
  setfattr, respectively.

* The attr and acl utilities are now shared with XFS.

This disk format change has been long planned for, as announced
previously. Due to this change, updating is slightly more complicated.

Please read the step-by-step guide at <http://acl.bestbits.at/steps.html>
carefully to learn how to update (or install the first time).

As always, the new code is found at <http://acl.bestbits.at/>.

KNOWN PROBLEMS
==============

Unfortunately the ext3 + ea sharing + quota + smp + high system load
problem documented at <http://acl.bestbits.at/problems.html> still seems
to be there. This problem has only occurred in stress testing; it is
extremely unlikely that you will run into this problem in production use.
We are still trying to track down the problem nevertheless, of course.

PLEASE HELP
===========

My last request for your help has resulted in very little response. Many
thanks to those who did help: Darrell McGuire, Eric Jarman, Ethan Benson
and Luka Renko.

Here is my updated list of to-do items.

  * Add the remaining architectures.

  * Help update the web pages.

  * Grab the FreeBSD manual pages for the ACL library, and rewrite
    the FreeBSD-isms so we can use them in the ACL package.

I would also highly appreciate your help this time.

Have a lot of fun with the new code!

Regards,
Andreas.
