Ports

Sparc

Some early posts have hinted at trouble getting Red Hat 5.2 to work on Sparc systems. Not much in the way of details is available as of press time, unfortunately.

Alpha

PC Week has run a long and positive article about the Alpha architecture. "...Digital is back...".

Folks wanting to get into the Alpha architecture cheaply may want to check out this CPU Micromart page; they are selling bare-bones 166 MHz Multia systems for $99. We can't say anything about the quality of these machines, not having gotten one ourselves; we just know that they are available.

At least some beta testers have received ApplixWare for the Alpha. The initial comments are quite positive. There was also an apology posted by Applix that they were not able to respond to all those who requested to be beta testers. Evidently they got quite a few requests.

PowerPC

The LinuxPPC folks have released a pre-announcement for LinuxPPC 5.0. New features include a GNOME-based interface and glibc2. The real release will be next month.
